FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Who founded Fielden?
Our story starts in the rolling, golden hills of the Cotswolds, at The Oxford Artisan Distillery (TOAD), which launched in 2012 with the vision of crafting certified organic premium spirits in the heart of Oxfordshire. The quality of their early small-batch whiskies attracted the attention of Diageo (the global Scotch whisky giant) whoexplored ways to scale production by working with their network of experts. They helped to establish Fielden in 2024, which following unconnected financial decisions across the Diageo portfolio, was sold to GHF in 2025 who are proudly acting as custodians of the brand and continuing the founding ethos of high quality spirits with uncompromising stewardship of the English countryside.
Where are you based?
Fielden is made with specialist partners across England. Our whisky is distilled atAdnamsin Suffolk, but we like to think of Fielden’s home as the fields of England rather than one single distillery site.
Are you regenerative? You used to talk about regenerative farming more – is it still relevant?
Sustainability and healthier ecosystems still matter deeply to us. We talk less about “regenerative” because the term is currently loosely defined and can mean different things to different people.Instead, we’re focused on what we can clearly stand behind: diverse rye grain, creating healthier ecosystems, working with responsible and expert partners, to create a whisky of expressive flavour.
Do you still work with farmers?
Yes. We remain proud of the farmers who helped shape Fielden’s early vision, even though our story telling now puts more emphasis on the grain itself and the flavour it creates.
What makes you different from Scotch?
Fielden is grain-led rather than barrel-led. We use naturally diverse English rye to create a brighter, fresher, more expressive whisky with a more contemporary style and strong versatility in cocktails.
Scotch is like the eldest child; everyone’s knows them, they’re much older, and they have a long list of rules to follow. English whisky is one of the youngest in the family; we have fewer rules to follow but we look up to and learn from our older sibling with pride.
So, you can think of Fielden as being in many ways very similar to Scotch; we are crafted from malted and unmalted cereal grains, fermented, distilled, and left to mature for a minimum of 3 years in oak casks.
However, most Scotch is made predominately with Barley, whereas we choose Rye (because of the naturally diverse grain and benefits to ecosystems). Further, unlike Scotch, we’ve decided to source all our grain exclusively from the country we represent. And finally, we avoid using chill-filtration by bottling at 48% ABV, which preserves the flavour-rich oils in the whisky making for a full-flavoured whisky that bartenders love for mixing into cocktails. Many (not all) Scotch whiskies, dilute to 40% ABV and chill-filtrate to lengthen the barrel and appeal to a mass audience.
Is Fielden Whisky made in England?
Yes. Fielden Whisky is made with specialist partners across England. Our whisky is distilled at Adnams in Suffolk, but we like to think of Fielden’s home as the fields of England rather than one single distillery site.
Is Fielden B Corp certified?
No, Fielden is not currently B Corp certified. Our focus is on making practical long-term decisions around responsible partnerships, sustainable packaging, lower-impact production, and healthier ecosystems.Achieving this certification is certainly ambition we are working towards.
Is Fielden Organic?
Not yet. Fielden is not currently certified organic, but it is an ambition we are actively working towards. All ofnour grain has been sourced from farms practising organic or responsible farming methods.
Do you have a distillery?
No, we don't have our own distillery. This gives us the opportunity to work with some of the best whisky specialists in England at every stage of the process: Malting at Warminster, Distilling at Adnams, Maturation at our Cask House.
Furthermore, in Rye Whisky, ‘contract distilling’ is considered industry standard in order to be able to produce at the scale required to extract the best possible flavour from hardier rye grains.
What’s in Fielden Whisky?
The primary ingredients in Fielden Whisky are diverse grains (rye, wheat and barley), water and yeast. Our grain recipe is predominantly focused on rye, always at least 51% of a mashbill. While yeast and enzymes are essential in the production process, they act as aids and are not present in the final whisky.
What tasting notes define Fielden’s house character?
Fielden Rye Whisky is characterised by warm flaky pastry, butter and caramel, with floral and fruity notes on the nose. The finish highlights the freshness of our grain and minty, peppercorn rye spice.
For more information on each whisky, including grain composition, cask types, maturation and expert tasting notes, visit the product pages on our website, where you can download a detailed fact sheet from our Whiskymaker.
What casks do you use for maturation?
Our whisky is mainly matured in a combination of American oak barrels and some light sweet wine barrels, keeping the wine influence subtle so it doesn’t have a heavy impact on the character of our spirit.
We love to experiment - with everything from herbal liqueur casks to orange wines and even different wood species.
American oak works beautifully with rye, helping the spirit mellow through the inner charcoal, as well as releasing great flavours from the white oak. French Sauternes wine casks are a great addition, bringing floral and fruity notes that add sweetness and complement the rye spice. Portuguese Moscatel wine casks enhance the pastry richness of ou
How long is Fielden Whisky matured?
The minimum age of each whisky is detailed in the relevant fact sheet, available to download from our website. Generally, our whiskies are a blend of casks aged between 3.5 and 6 years, sourced from multiple recipes and cask types.
Does Fielden Whisky contain any additives, like caramel?
No, Fielden Whisky has no additives. Its rich colour comes naturally from the high rye content and the aging process in carefully chosen casks - never from added colourants. The whisky’s flavour comes only from the diverse grains and the cask, with no artificial flavours or preservatives.
Is Fielden Whisky non-chill filtered?
Yes, Fielden Whisky is non-chill filtered. This means it retains all its natural oils, proteins, and flavour compounds, which contribute to its rich texture and depth of character. By skipping the chill filtration process, Fielden Whisky maintains its full-bodied mouthfeel and enhances the complexity of its aromas and flavours. As a result, you may notice a slight natural haze when the whisky is chilled or diluted, a sign of its authenticity and quality.

Does your whisky go off or lose its quality over time?
Whisky doesn’t expire like perishable foods, but once opened, it will start to oxidise after about six months. For the best flavour, we recommend enjoying it responsibly within two years of opening. It won’t be harmful to drink after this period, but the taste may become duller over time.
What is the best way to store Fielden Whisky to preserve its quality?
Store Fielden Whisky upright in its original bottle. Unlike wine, whisky has a high alcohol content that can degrade a natural cork if stored on its side. Keeping the bottle upright prevents this and protects the seal. For long-term storage - especially over several years - ensure the bottle is kept in a cool, dark place with stable temperature and humidity. There is no need to regularly moisten the cork, though gently tilting the bottle once a year is optional if storage conditions are very dry. Avoid direct sunlight, heat, or temperature fluctuations, particularly once the bottle is opened.
What is the best way to enjoy Fielden Whisky?
Fielden is a naturally full flavoured whisky with expressive character, perfect for mixing into classic whisky cocktails, including the Old Fashioned and Whisky Ginger.
