Fielden Faces is our ongoing series celebrating the people who live, work and create across the fields of England. People whose work is shaped by the landscapes around them, and whose values reflect our own: craftsmanship, care and a deep connection to place.
Our first story takes us to furniture maker Joss Stoddart.
Working from his countryside workshop, Joss creates furniture that celebrates the character of natural materials. Every piece begins with timber, but it's patience, observation and respect for the process that bring it to life.
We spent the day with Joss to explore his craft, the landscape that inspires him and why some things simply can't be rushed.
A life shaped by the landscape
Joss grew up surrounded by fields and farmland.
That early connection to nature shaped the way he sees the world today, influencing not only what he makes but how he makes it.
As Joss explains:
"I grew up outdoors surrounded by fields and farmland.
I quickly became fascinated by how things worked, how things grew, and the quiet relationship between people and the landscape around them.
This gave me a deep-rooted respect for craftsmanship and that everything valuable takes time."
His philosophy is reflected in every stage of his work.
"Wood has its own rhythm, skills require patience and taste develops slowly.
In the world we live in this goes against the grain but there are some things you simply can't rush."
It's a sentiment that resonates with everything we believe at Fielden.
A fresh perspective
For Joss, the countryside offers more than inspiration.
It provides space to think.
"The land, the trees, and the fields around me, give me a fresh perspective and framework to think.
They remind me to appreciate that real growth takes time.
Just like the landscape itself."
It's this appreciation for patience, craftsmanship and the beauty of taking your time that made Joss the perfect first Fielden Face.
